A plumber is a tradesperson who specializes in installing and maintaining systems used for potable (drinking) water, sewage and drainage in plumbing systems.

Skills

Students in Plumbing are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Assembling, installing, and repairing pipes, fittings, or fixtures according to plumbing codes
  • Measuring, cutting, threading, and bending pipes using hand or power tools
  • Locating and marking the positions of pipes using measuring instruments
  • Following state and local building codes
  • Locating malfunctions in plumbing systems and repairing them so the systems run properly

Career Options

Most Plumbing graduates go to work in factories or for private businesses. Most plumbers work full time, and many may work nights and weekends in order to handle emergencies. Some plumbers are self-employed and work on their own schedules.

Requirements

Before entering the program, students must:

  • Complete all required activity in the Career Preparation Period, including Career Exploration and Career Success/Workplace Skills.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
